We know so very little about Philly cassette-rockers Mavis The Dog, but what we know — based solely on what we’ve heard on Bandcamp, across two very lo-fi yet also very beguiling releases — is enough for us to tell you to go out and see them on a Tuesday night in August when the city itself will feel mostly empty of humankind. In fact, this might be the optimal condition — this is good ol’ bedroom indie pop of the sort they used to make way down in New Zealand and Australia in the deadbeat ‘80s. In fact, there’s more than a dose of the Go-Betweens’ early demos in these clever little Velvets-inspired tunes. Plus, we’re betting Mavis knows the swingin’-with-two-bats secret of Pavement and GBV before them: When your recordings sound this chintzy, you’re bound to sound five times as good live!
