You would be hard pressed to find music harder and more raw coming out of Philly at any time ever than the deep, almost industrial grind of Moor Mother’s Fetish Bones LP. Over beats manipulated almost to the point of them no longer being beats anymore, Moor Mother (government name: Camae Ayewa) lays down lyrics and samples likewise that seem to summon revolution, release and apocalypse all at once. It’s more metal than metal. And unlike a lot of other existential howls of this type, across mediums and time itself, Moor Mother doesn’t come out of a vacuum — rather, out of an Afro-Futurism scene based in West Philly that’s gathering a good bit of steam right now.
Community Futurism: An Evening Curated By Moor Mother digs into Fetish Bones in a live setting, in part, but is also a collaboration with Black Quantum Futurism and the Community Futures Lab. Across two sets, and with multiple musicians accompanying via analog and digital instrumentation, you’ll hear those tracks and more.
