Teenage Fanclub: The Gilmore Girls Of Rock?

  • World Cafe Live 3025 Walnut St. Philadelphia, PA

From their very first howling notes on down to their present, Byrds-ian mellowed-with-age records — of which the just released Here is as fine an example as any — Teenage Fanclub has captured nothing so much as the sound of crossing the finish line. At least, to this writer, anyway. Even back when they were wrapped in a grungey wrapper at the outset of the 1990s, Fanclub has conveyed a sweetness, a sense of relief, and an almost comfort food level of friendliness. That they're essentially the Gilmore Girls of rock bands should have or would have done them in a long time ago, but for their easygoing style, nobody-does-'em-like-that harmonies and subtle-earworm songcraft. Where so many of their contemporaries long ago turned into abominations, Teenage Fanclub has doggedly turned themselves into a really gorgeous aberration.
