Philebrity is saddened to learn of the passing of legendary Philly guitarist Jef Lee Johnson. Johnson, whose work spanned decades and freely jumped musical barriers, was perhaps best known as a member of The Soultronics, the session-man supergroup (which also included ?uestlove and James Poyser), originally formed to back D’Angelo. Johnson’s journeyman career was perhaps best described in this 2010 City Paper profile, and reactions to his passing are still rippling through the music world. Longtime friend and record producer Aaron Luis Levinson told us, “He was truly the best that ever held a guitar in his hands.” Our most sincere condolences go out today to Jef’s family, friends and fans.
