This Weekend: Halloweekend

FRIDAY:

>>> Get in the Halloween spirit with a band-as-other-band show at Milkboy, where The Quelle Source will be performing as David Bowie, Goodnight Lights playing tunes as Guided By Voices, and Long Walk Home will be incognito as Bob Dylan.
>>> You can check out the sweeping indie-pop of LA’s Milo Greene at Johnny Brenda’s as they play with openers Lucius.
>>> PhilaMOCA is hosting Deli Magazine’s Halloweeniversary Party tonight, featuring live sets from Granchildren, Sic Alps, Ghost Light, and Laser Background. Because partying for only one reason is lame.

And your Philadelphia Film Fest picks:

>>> A doc about the oft-forgotten African-American punk band Death, A Band Called Death, screens at The Ritz Bourse at 5:40PM.
>>> Holy Motors, the so-called “weirdest movie ever made,” was one of the stand-outs at this year’s Cannes Film Fest, and screens at 7:10PM at Ritz East.
>>> And The Sapphires, a true-tale of an Aboriginal motown group, stars Chris O’Dowd (who seems to be everywhere these days) and screens at the Ritz East at 7:20PM.
>>> Or, if you’re in the mood for a classic fright, Tobe Hooper‘s legendary Poltergeist screens outdoors at Shoemaker Green at 9:30PM.

SATURDAY:

>>> Few bands deserve the indie-rock legend-status more than the guitar and noise driven Dinosaur Jr., and they will continue to cement that status tonight when they play Union Transfer with Shearwater, behind this year’s I Bet On Sky.
>>> The indie/power/rock-n-roll/punk-pop of Those Darlins, will be getting all the kids up and moving at Johnny Brenda’s, along with openers Heavy Cream and Philly’s own Slutever.
>>> And the Troc is hosting DJ Robert Drake’s Sex Dwarf Halloween Party, which features new wave jams, crazy costume contests, and a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s the Halloween-iest of Halloween things going on this weekend.

And your Philadelphia Film Fest picks:

>>> Teddy Bear, which brought home a directing award at Sundance this year, tells the story of a bodybuilder who is very much a large man but is still intimidated by his own mother. It screens at 12:05PM at Ritz East.
>>> The fest’s official Closing Night Film, Robert ZemeckisFlight, will screen at the Annenberg Zellerbach Theater at 7PM. Zemeckis will be on hand for a Q&A afterwards.
>>> And for some good laughs and scares, check out the Japanese horror-comedy Dead Sushi (about killer sushi, natch) at the Ritz Bourse at 10:15PM.

SUNDAY:

>>> We can’t promise it’ll be spooky, but it’s gonna be a blast: The Black Landlord Halloween Extravaganza is going down at Kungfu Necktie tonight, with … uh … Black Landlord and St. James and the Apostles.
>>> The legendary Rodriguez is playing a sold-out show at World Cafe Live tonight, so if you don’t have tickets yet … well … too bad.

And your Philadelphia Film Fest picks:

>>> The Joe Jack Talcum-scored story of a former punk-frontman confronted by his past, Detonator, screens at the Ritz East at 10:15PM.
>>> Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, the documentary about that Journey fan who ended up taking over Steve Perry’s job as the band’s frontman, screens at the Ritz East at 5:10PM.
