This Weekend: You Oughta Go
FRIDAY:
>>> The Not-So-Silent Cinema presents Nosferatu at PhilaMOCA, with a live score composed by West Philadelphia Orchestra’s Brendan Cooney. There are two shows tonight (7PM and 9:15PM) and one on Sunday (3:30PM). Tickets are available here.
>>> Savoir Adore, who we just got tipped off to and are vibing on pretty solid, are playing with Buried Beds at Ortleib’s Lounge.
>>> Kick off the Halloween season tonight with The Misfits (sans Danzig, sadly) at the Trocadero.
>>> Generationals are headlining at Johnny Brenda’s with support from Maus Haus and former Dr. Dog Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang.
>>> And Underground Arts has got an electronica-flavored night going on with City Rain, Instamatic, Galvanize, and Family Business. Youth, amirite?
Tonight’s Philadelphia Film Fest Picks:
>>> Of course, there’s Beware of Mr. Baker at 5PM at RAVE Auditorium 6.
>>> We can’t sell you on The Good Son more than the simple synopsis can, so here it is: “In 1982, Korean boxer Duk Koo Kim died of injuries sustained during a fierce bout with lightweight champion Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. Decades later, Kim’s son decides to meet the man who killed his father, drawing a lifetime of pain and misunderstanding to a close in this powerful documentary.” The film screens at 2:40PM at the Ritz Bourse.
>>> An anthology film of 26 different horror shorts — each where a death is caused by something that begins with their assigned letter of the alphabet — The ABCs of Death brings together Ti West, Yoshihiro Nishimura, and two dozen others to scare the crap out of you in the Alphabet Soup of horror films. It screens tonight at 9:45PM at RAVE.
SATURDAY:
>>> In shows we gave away tickets to: Alanis Morissette plays at the Electric Factory (and on television), and GZA plays the entirety of Liquid Swords with Blayer Pointdujor and the Rockers Galore at The Troc.
>>> Black Landlord and Schoolly D are playing at Ortlieb’s Lounge tonight, and expect to dance and drink, if for some reason you weren’t expecting to do that.
>>> The Slutwalk returns, starting at Clark Park and continuing on to Love Park.
>>> And Elephant Stone are playing Live From The Westmoreland at Westmoreland and Collins. There’s free parking, the show is free, and there will be free beer. If you can’t make it, you can webstream it on your computer, which likely does not dispense free beer.
Tonight’s Philadelphia Film Fest Picks:
>>> Ben Lewin‘s The Sessions tells the true story of Mark O’Brien (the amazing John Hawkes), a journalist and poet who spent much of his time confined to an iron lung, who hires a sex surrogate (Helen Hunt) to help him lose his virginity. It screens at 2:15PM at the Prince Music Theater.
>>> Stand Up Guys, in which Fisher Stevens directs Al Pacino, Alan Arkin, and Christopher Walken in your standard “one epic night” film, except this one involves elderly people. Its only festival screening is tonight at 5PM at Prince Music Theater.
>>> And the man who brought you Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep (which is honestly excellent) brings a story of street drugs, cross dimensional travel, demons and more in John Dies at the End at RAVE Auditorium 6 at 9:50PM. Attendees are welcome to stay after (for no extra charge) for a midnight screening of Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning 3D .
SUNDAY:
>>> The South Philly Fall Fest, one of those little block-party type deals in front of Lucky 13, featuring the phenomneal lineup of Spacin’, Residuels, Joe Kusy and the Rot Through Boys, Robo Trippers, our editor’s own Arctic Splash and more.
>>> And the folk jams of the actually pretty good Sea Wolf will be on display at the North Star Bar, which is riding a streak of some pretty solid shows lately. Also playing are Hey Marseilles and Andrew Lipke.
Tonight’s Philadelphia Film Fest Picks:
>>> Room 237, a documentary where fans discuss and obsessively break down Kubrick’s The Shining, screens at Ritz East at 4:40 PM. And wouldn’t ya know, a (separate asmission) screening of The Shining follows it up.
>>> Rick Alverson‘s The Comedy, which has been described as “subversive” and “confrontational” is sure to divide audience members when it screens at 7:05PM at RAVE Auditorium 6.
>>> And your only chance to see some Ron Swanson this fest is in Someone Up There Likes Me, a comedy that follows two friends (Nick Offerman and Keith Poulson) over 35 years of their lives. It screens tonight at 10:10PM at Ritz Bourse.
