Allow us to direct your attention to this Metro story regarding a possible Inky/DN driver’s strike, laden with quotes from Teamsters Local 628′s John Laigaie. For it is a study in cognitive dissonance. The union’s position here, as laid out by Laigaie, is that they want everything but they know they’ll get almost nothing and they say they’ll strike but they probably won’t really strike because that is a bummer that no one could really bear, and besides…
They could bring in other people, of course, but then our energy will be spent outside the plant [...] We’ll be out at various locations where the papers are sold asking the public not to buy the papers. And when you get into that, the terrible reality is that we then have to work to destroy the paper we worked all these years to keep afloat – which we don’t want to do.
Um, yeah. About that. Aw cripes, never mind.
