Slingluff Gallery Closing Up Shop And Moving After Four Years

Slingluff Gallery, which we have previously called “consistently one of the more switched-on, yet off-the-beaten-path … destinations in town,” is packing everything up and moving up to, “a small town in the western Catskills along the upper Delaware River called Callicoon, NY.” In a farewell message, Slingluff said,

There are many reasons as to why we are relocating from Philadelphia, most of all is that we want to feel like we are a part of a community. A town that supports and helps with the building of other small businesses, one that embraces and celebrates the arts, a town where you can be yourself and be happy with who you are. We will never forget Philadelphia and the amazing people that we have met here. Four years of our life has been here, on Girard, it’s all that we really know as a couple. From the good to the bad we have seen it all on Girard. From being spit on by a police officer to seeing muggings, from flowers popping up from the sidewalks to flower boxes being setup, from buildings like the one next to Frankford Hall and behind the gallery going up with no permits posted to all of the great times spent at Egg, it has felt like a life time. Yes, we will never forget Philadelphia and the amazing people that we have met here”

Slingluff will be missed, but if you ever find yourself cruising around the western Catskills stop in and say hi.

TL/DR version : “We sure did have fun despite this city sucking so hard.” Thanks for the backhanded compliments, enjoy small town life.

Always dug this spot and the creepy cat that used to hang out in there all by itself but, yeah, it’s a real shame they had to drop a “see ya, stinktown!” like that.

I find it to be particularly out of character that Philebrity didn’t have something to say about the “screw you guys I’m going home” tone of this goodbye.

  • philebrity

That’s kind of why we posted it.

Writing a goodbye message to your community and telling them you’re leaving because you didn’t feel like part of the community? To quote Tig Notaro, “OK if you think that. And OK if you say that…to yourself.”

Sorry that some of you feel as if I am back-lashing Philadelphia, that was not the intent. In the first part of this post (which I am guessing you are referring to) I am talking about a town verses another town, not a city. As for community I was referring to the community of businesses not the people of a community, maybe that should have been made more clear. That is all, nothing more. We have been lucky to have been able to met all the amazing people that we have, friendships that will last a life time.

Good call, I say. Get going to somewhere where the business will be appreciated and grow before Girard turns into Old City 2.0 and no one will care at all if you’re not a frat bar.

  • Amarikah

Then maybe get one of your good Philly friends to edit your announcement of your arrival in your new town before you send it so you don’t inadvertently insult everyone.

“somewhere where the business will be appreciated and grow” for all of eight people to enjoy.

Clearly you’ve never been to the Catskills. It’s actually a tourist destination. As opposed to good old crack-laced Girard Ave.

These guys brought some of the country’s best cutting edge art to Fishtown and did it on one of the roughest litter strewn blocks. They endured lots of BS from drunken rejects, surrounded by non-stop crime. I completely understand why they would want to leave Philly and aim for a more peaceful environment. It’s not like they just hung around for a few months. They gave it a long haul. Why you’d be even vaguely insulted by this is beyond me.

Slingluff, you will be missed, although I couldn’t support you through sales I always enjoyed walking past (and inside) and the idea that the other vacant business fronts in this area may follow suit. Philly does some philthy things.. its all in the experience, and I hope you had a good one. Good luck to you!

It seems that they had trouble paying some of their artists prior to leaving town. Not a great way of doing business at all.
