This Weekend: Happy Birthday Jerry!
FRIDAY:
>>> We know it’s Friday and you probably don’t feel like learning, but what if said learning was actually a BIG OL’ GRATEFUL DEAD PARTY AT A BOWLING ALLEY? Better, right? It’s Jerry Garcia‘s Birthday Party at North Bowl, and in addition to tunes and vibes and balls and pins, there’s… this:
Learn about the UPenn’s Psychedemia program, with lectures from Neşe L.Ş. Devenot M.A. and Sitaram Das. Neşe L.Ş. Devenot M.A., a doctoral graduate student in the program in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Pennsylvania and a Contributing Editor for Reality Sandwich and Evolver.net will be lecturing on “Poetic Vision and the Psychedelic Experience.” Sitaram Das, yoga teacher, podcaster, and also lecturer will be leading “Sitting with the Dead: The Meditation and Reflection of the Words of Robert Hunter.” He will lead the meditation while reading some of the best works by Robert Hunter.
Well, OK!
>>> Or, make a night of it in the Fish: Show your face at the Little Baby’s Ice Cream opening party, and then check out Motown/Philly Sound group The Sensational Soul Cruisers at Penn Treaty Park at 6:30PM.
>>> First Friday in August usually ain’t much, but record nerds take note: There’s a Sub Pop art show at Art In The Age.
SATURDAY:
>>> As discussed, the Mad Decent Block Party is not at the Piazza. Phew!
>>> Elsewhere in the world of tunes: Bouffant Bangout at The Barbary; and, for a different flavor of nostalgia, check out Sons & Heirs (Smiths Tribute) and Disorder (Joy Division Tribute) at North Star Bar.
>>> Or if you’re looking for performance, check out to Underground Arts at 8 on Saturday to hear a set by, er, Philadelphia Magazine Comedian of the Year Juliet Hope Wayne plus NYC storytellers and Dancing Girls.
SUNDAY:
>>> Second Street Festival, is gonna be HUGE! And feel-good! C’mon, chant down Bro-bylon.
>>> Elsewhere: The kid-friendly Sundae dance party is at Morgan’s Pier; Dong Johnson closes out the @nd St. Fest at Johnny Brenda’s; and Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals plays PhilaMOCA.
