The art and 70+ films of experimental film makers and stop-motion animators, the Quay brothers, will be honored next month in a MoMA retrospective entitled “Quay Brothers: On Deciphering the Pharmacist’s Prescription for Lip-Reading Puppets.”
The identical twin brothers were born in Norristown in 1947 and studied illustration at the University of the Arts. Though they’ve spent most of their career in England, the brothers have said that the flea markets they saw growing up in Norristown remain the source of some of their greatest inspiration. In 2010 they received Pew Grant to create a film for the Mütter Museum, which premiered to mostly tepid reviews in 2011.
The exhibit opens on August 12th and runs until January 7th, so there’s still time to snag a $1 Megabus ticket to NYC and see the fruits of Norristown for yourself.
