Rumblings: Booktalken
>>> Back in the days when the Sunday Inquirer was something people who liked to read things liked to look at, there was a books section. We shit you not! And this dude Carlin Romano ran it. Then, like so many things at the Inquirer, it went away. And so did Romano, sort of — he still teaches “Philosophical Problems of Journalism” and “Journalism & Public Service” at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication. We mention Mr. Romano because he’s done something no Philadelphian or Inquirer person has done in as long as we can remember — landed himself on the front page of the NYT Book Review. It’s on account of his new tome, America the Philosophical; the review isn’t a stone rave, but even so, it’s worth a look. Congrats, teach. [NYT]
>>> And over NPR, Philly scribe Solomon Jones, who’s got a new novel out, trades once again on the info that, once upon a time, he did bad stuff. [NPR]
>>> And finally, an endorsement; no, more of AN ORDER. You may remember this video we posted a while back about Port Richmond Books, housed in an old movie theater on Richmond Street and stacked front to back with books, glorious books. Well, we finally checked it out this weekend, and at the risk of blowing up the spot, IF YOU LOVE BOOKS, YOU MUST GO THERE. IT IS SHOCKINGLY AMAZING, AND VERY CHEAP. We never wanted to leave. Put aside an entire afternoon to live in this place at your nearest convenience, and take cash or a check. Whatever your field of interest, everything you have been looking for is there. We can’t believe we just told you this, but really. Go. [Facebook]
