Boasting three Tony awards and making bank like you would not even believe, Fela! — the musical based on the life of legendary Afrobeat impresario Fela Kuti — is showing no signs of stopping. Producers Shawn ‘JAY Z’ Carter, Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, Ruth & Stephen Hendel, Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and The National Theatre of Great Britain just announced that, in the immediate wake of a multi-city tour, Fela! will do a victory lap of 32 performances in NYC later this summer. We mention it because A) it’s nice to see Ahmir getting paaaaaaaaaaiiid, and B) we love Fela, and as we officially roll into summer, there’s no better time to take in the man’s amazing and crazy vibes. Just about everything Fela ever did seems to be on Spotify currently, and those Knitting Factory reissues are pretty sweet, too.
