Well, Hello, Freedom Taxi!

Regular readers of this site will know our current taxi marital status: Divorced from Old City, and convinced that almost all other taxi suitors are actively trying to kill us. And we mean it when we say, in the hushed and ominous tones that only a recent divorcee can, that it’s rough out there. So rough, in fact, that we paid little attention when Freedom Taxi made waves in the fall with the news that they, of new fleet and no bad smells yet, would be rolling out Philadelphia’s first-ever hybrid taxis. For those of you that take cabs and/or talk with cab drivers, you already know that this in and of itself is news enough; the only “green” things on the minds of most cab drivers are tips.

That was the press-friendly, feel-good line on Freedom Taxi, but now that they’re on the street, there’s even better news: Freedom Taxi is actually worth a damn as taxi companies go. If you call them, they come. Their drivers are friendly and do not seem to be parenting or working another job by bluetooth as they drive you. They know where they’re going, and if they don’t, they figure it out without damaged ego or language barrier. And then there’s the cabs: They have leg room! You can watch Kelly Ripa on the little TV in back! And if you touch another part of the screen, you can get ESPN headlines! OK, your smartphone can do all of that better, but still: We’ve felt so shat-upon by so many Philly cab companies over the years that we cannot help but be easily impressed.

Hopefully, Freedom Taxi will keep it up and not get too big for its britches like Old City or get squeezed out of the cut-throat Philly taxi game altogether like the late, great Avant Garde (sigh). Also, the cabs are painted in late-1970s Phillies colors — baby blue and maroon. Suck on that, you incompetent 333-3333 jerks.

The big question is whether or not they hassle you to pay in cash. When a cabbie is willing to accept a card, then AND ONLY THEN will we be free from taxi tyranny.

I’ve been seeing these “Phillies Throwback” taxis around a lot. Is the color scheme an intentional nod to the Phillies?

Haven’t gotten any lip from them yet; so far, so good.

Called for a cab last week, early afternoon on a Friday. Had time to spare. Cab never arrived.

Has anyone heard of this new (to the area) car service Uber? It’s an app and it’s pretty effing awesome. No need for cash! https://www.uber.com/#

talked to a cabbie driving one the other day.  driver doesn’t see the gas savings because he pays higher rent for the hybrid.  however, he said he preferred it anyway because the cabs are nicer and have better radios.   he was a friendly gentleman and even waited for me to grab my spare bike tires out of storage at uhaul.  all positive. good call philebrity.

They also have the very first handicap accessible cabs in the whole city. Is it crazy we’ve gone that long without?

I’ve been using Freedom (almost) exclusively for the past couple of months.  The only problem I’ve experienced with them was a long (~40 min) wait for an airport cab from Pennsport, but that was around rush hour on a Friday morning.

I called for a cab today, it was a great experience.  They were slightly early (!!!) to pick me up, the cab was cool (no small feat today), and the driver didn’t drive like an insane person.  This was in stark contrast to my return trip, which was an old yellow beater pumping putrid air under the bench seat.  5 out of 5, would ride again.

Freedom Rocks….  The cabs are clean, hybrid and i was in one that was wheelchair accessible.  Nice to see that there is someone with a BRAIN in the taxi business!  Why cant all philly cabs be freedom cabs
