You Will Soon Be Able To Ride A Goddamn Surrey In Fairmount Park

Well, if the 90 degree temps hadn’t already told you, we are in full summer-swing right now. And to add to that whole get-super-sweaty-just-walking-around vibe, a seashore staple is coming to Fairmount Park: Bike rentals.

Tomorrow morning at 10 AM, Mayor Nutter will be on hand to cut the ribbon for the grand opening of Wheel Fun Rentals (at Lloyd Hall, 1 Boathouse Row). The bike rental kiosk is opened in partnership with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and will feature surreys, “locally based Fuji hybrid two-wheeled bikes, tandem bikes … deuce coupe bikes and Segways.”

Now just get us some funnel cake and we’ll be set. And while you’re at it, let’s make a drive-in surrey spot to watch this, it’s exactly what Jay-Z envisioned.

That’s weird, that place has been renting surreys for a few months now, so I guess it’s now just becoming official?  These fucking things are the bane of my existence, as someone who frequently uses the path up and down the river, since they’re primarily used by absent-mined tourists who are paying attention to anything and everything but where they’re going.  I’ve seen one of the 4-person models plow right into a jogger pushing a stroller, and I’m sure it wasn’t the first time it’s happened…

Those things are awful and they have been available since the beginning of the season.  There was a good bike outfit renting bikes there the last few years, apparently now it’s a patronage firm doing it and they adde all sorts of nonsense.

They’ve been available for awhile, and they are destroying the trail for those of us who use it for actual exercise.

The surreys are WAY too big, way too slow and ”driven” by inattentive clueless morons.

On one short run the other day I saw four near-misses between surreys and runners/cyclists — each one the clear fault of the surrey operator.  They need to be gone.

Ban the Surreys. And the Ducks.

Didn’t Trophy or Breakaway Bikes own that stand before the city kicked them out?

Occupy Surrey is the first occupy event I could get behind. Those things are a menace. Worse than the rowers.

Robert Allen, who works at the Parks and Rec. Department (PPR) was in charge of the bringing the concession to Philly.  He’s ready to
take any comments, good and bad.  His email is robert.allen@phila.gov and his phone is 215-686-0207.

Don’t worry… two or three lawsuits will be the demise of this blithe… It’s only a matter of time.

I’ve taken my running and biking off the Kelly Drive path and deeper into the park this season.  There’s a great 3.5 mile trail called the Boxer’s Path that goes up near the reservoir in East Fairmount Park.  Biking in West Fairmount park is much better than Kelly Drive, for those that like hills.
