Perfectly Nice Article About Philly’s Tech Growth Soiled By Yet Another “Philly Is A Real City” Quote From A Transplant

One of the nice offshoots about last week’s Philly Tech Week was and will continue to be articles like this one in Fast Company that break down the hype and get into the nitty-gritty of how and why the city is making great leaps in the tech sector. But seriously, AGAIN? Another person saying something along the lines of “This city is real life?” Did 300 years of beautiful American history somehow lead this person and all of the other friggin’ Etsy transplants who think they discovered this place think that, up until Indy Hall opened, THIS PLACE WAS A FUCKING MIRAGE? Sorry, it just sticks in our craws a bit. The actuality and realness of Philadelphia, to us, has never been up for debate, unless we were taking psychedelic drugs. Onward.

“In 2012, this has created a diverse community of entrepreneurs”… I wish we could go back to the point where it became acceptable to refer to yourself as an “entrepreneur”, and rewrite history from there. Though it is a good signal, kind of like a douche patch, to turn around and find someone else to talk to.

“Real” may not be the right word, but as a transplant I find that long-time residents are the people most likely to shout Philly down and talk shit. VERY few of the people that recognize te awesomeness of Philly seem to be from here. I’m a Detroit native and the same thing is true there. Optimism and change are coming from new residents, not the people who’ve experienced so much disappointment and corruption that they have no faith in the future.

As a lifelong Philadelphian, I respectfully beg to differ.

I get what you’re laying down, but I’m not going to get dickhurt over a guy who precedes labeling Philly a “real city” by calling it  the “the greatest city in the country.”

As a tech entrepreneur in Phila these articles are common place.  Does it really matter though? We have been shrugging this blabber off for years and not by slamming Phila, quite the opposite (Mandie).
But hey, there’s nothing like going to a local Tech event and stepping in to shock the crowd with some history. Philly Tech goes WAY BACK and has it’s roots in the film, military, and a lot of other tech business. If a transplant or even the new tech community wants to wax that this is all of their doing, then let them. The truth is out there and its digital.
