Groundbreaking on the Home2 Suites Hotel, a 246-unit building close to the recently expanded Convention Center, has begun. Mayor Nutter was in attendance at Tuesday’s digging ceremony, which earned this priceless quote from State Rep. Dwight Evans: “There’s nothing like the sweet smell of construction.” Indeed. This partly government-funded development bodes well for stalled plans to renovate the famed Hale Building into the 90-room Juniper Hotel, among other downtown projects. Making Philly, and the Oprah-fied Reading Terminal are specifically, even more touristy may not be our idea of great economic strategy, but if it’s the price we must pay to inspire confidence across the building board, we will gladly pay it. There’s nothing like the sweet smell of self-sufficiency.
