MP3 Of The Moment: Daughn Gibson, “In the Beginning”

Emanating from the same blown-out sort-of rural, sort-of suburban, but wholly weird Allentown punk rock howl that brought you Pissed Jeans and Pearls And Brass, hey everybody: Here’s Daughn Gibson. He is not, as you’d be forgiven from the picture, a male porn star; hell, his music isn’t even punk rock — or at least, not in terms of musical tropes. What he is instead is kind of the heartland’s answer to the Magnetic Fields, and his debut LP, All Hell, just dropped. That description is a merciless shorthand, though, because as you can hear from “In The Beginning” above, there’s all kinds of stuff going on here: Gospel, chillwave, Morrissey, even a little Suicide. Whatever that mix is, it’s about to blow Gibson — a gun enthusiast, and, we shit you not, former truck driver — right the hell up. Gibson got ‘Forked earlier today, and on May 4th, he’ll headline at the recently re-opened Ortlieb’s Lounge in NoLibs. For now, though, “In The Beginning”: Every one of them, we are told, comes from some other beginning’s end.
