R.I.P.: Tritone, 2001-2011

South Street’s Tritone — which just celebrated a 10-year anniversary and was home to the Citywide Special, Sugar Town, West Philadelphia Orchestra’s Baltic dance party, and many other Philly micro-institutions — looks like it’s setting up to close, claims Foobooz. And it’s a bummer. While the city has witnessed a new era of small music venues over the last few years, it has often seemed that each new one has felt more “pro” than the one previous; in contrast, Tritone has always felt perfectly grubby, the way a South Street rock-and-other-music venue should be. It was an easy place to get drunk, the stage was nice and low to the ground, and for new bands, it was the perfect place to find your feet. We’ll miss you, Tritone, and we’ll place you in the ever-growing pantheon of Things We’ll Miss When Philly’s Not So Weird Anymore.

Update: Tritone’s booker, Sara Sherr, tells us that “Tritone is actually open through January, the amount of time it takes
for the sale to go through. In the meantime, all shows are on as scheduled.”

    Thanks for the kind words.

It is my understanding that the venue will remain open through January, the amount of time that it takes the sale to go through.

So all scheduled shows are still on!

So Occupy Philly is going to outlast Tritone. This hipster nightmare just keeps getting worse.

What is “economic inequality” anyway? It’s such a vague concept. What does it mean? If only those protesters could get their message straight and provide an area for illegal skateboarding then maybe they’d attract some hipsters.
