PSA: Register Now For Bike Philly

More info here.

  • Bicycle Coalition

Other nonprofits give you a coffee mug in exchange for their support. We close down streets and let you bike through Philly without cars. Whatcha say to that, WXPN?

(Kidding – we love you, WXPN)

Also, does your band want to play along the route? We’re looking for musicians/bands to give our riders some tunes as they pedal past. Contact us (caroline at bicyclecoalition.org) if you’re interested.

I don’t understand the point of paying for the opportunity to ride your bike. You can ride more than half that route on the schuylkill trail for free any day. If you want to ride 30 miles, bike all the way to Valley Forge. That’s a great, quiet ride.

  • Bicycle Coalition

Riding a bike is free of course – that’s the great part of riding bikes! This event is a fundraiser for us, so the registration cost is a donation (we’re a nonprofit membership organization, despite what folks like Stu Bykofsky might say). Your money pays for the advocacy work that allows you to bike to Valley Forge in the first place.

And you can’t normally ride down Arch, Columbus Blvd and Kelly Drive without worrying about cars. Thousands of bikes owning streets normally reserved for cars is pretty sweet, in our humble opinion.

This is a fun event because of the streets being closed down. I participated last year and I will hopefully be around that weekend to join in this year. It’s alot of fun just cruising around Philly not worrying about car traffic.

  • heatmiser

I know what the purpose of the ride is and I think it’s great that you get a good turnout. I just don’t know too many people who want to ride with 8,000 spandex clad bikers on narrow streets. And pay for it.

While we are on the advocating topic. What are the chances of getting bike routes from Philly to Merion or Cynwyd that aren’t dangerous (e.g. two lane roads with no shoulder or bike lanes)? I’d love to bike to work, but I don’t want to die doing it.

  • the_ill

are you being purposely obtuse? do you post on philly.com?

  • Snake

    @heatmiser

If I understand it correctly, this is exactly the sort of theing that they are raising money for.

And what’s the part of that route that you have trouble with? Thru the city, you’re mostly good on those Fairmount Park roads. Crossing over City Line is clearly when it gets bad.

heatmiser: You “don’t understand the point of paying for the opportunity to ride your bike,” yet “know what the purpose of the ride is.” It’s a fundraiser. Yet, you mysteriously have no problem asking Bicycle Coalition to get bike routes for you while refusing to participate. This is the same mentality that expects the world but doesn’t want to pay taxes, because riding your bike is “free.” Get involved.

  • Zombie Larry

closing major arteries so some pinheads an go for a bike ride is ludicrous. The amount of commerce dollars lost in a poor economy is inexcusable. Just another example of how out of touch left wingers are with reality.

China has a great bike program and you get a free Mao jacket! Go there.

Is Zombie Larry a joke account, or something? Please tell me it is.

“I know what the purpose of the ride is and I think it’s great that you get a good turnout. I just don’t know too many people who want to ride with 8,000 spandex clad bikers on narrow streets. And pay for it.”

I can think of about 8,000 of them.

Eakins Oval at 8 a.m. on a Saturday is a major artery? For whom, the homeless?

  • bmurray

Hm, “pinheads…” Oh, I get it- Larry thinks he’s Bill O’Reilly!

  • bmurray

    (That is so cute!)
