Dept. Of Meaningless Lists: This One’s Actually Right

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Philly named 6th Worst Dressed City In America by GQ. Here’s the worst part: They’re completely right. There’s like a dozen men in this city who actually dress like men (and not, say, Artie Lange). If we had our druthers, Commonwealth Proper would be doing triage on every street corner.

>>> Color us stoked to dig into the new one from Philly’s own Nikki Jean, whose new Pennies In A Jar sees her pulling a sweet throwback move and going all Dusty In Memphis with producer Sam Hollander. The result, from the few tracks we’ve scoped so far, sounds like the middle point between Mark [...]

Bastille Day: Who Says It Can’t Be Our Holiday Too?

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

There are few things we enjoy in America more than a good holiday, even if it’s not ours. This Bastille Day (which is today, Happy Bastille Day!) there are quite a few ways to celebrate the storming of the infamous French prison right here in Philadelphia. Head over towards Eastern State Penitentiary any time in [...]

And Then, On The Appointed Day, We Agreed With Something Totally Batshit Fundamentalist Christians Had To Say

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

“Hipsters are bohemian, homosexuals who enjoy obscure music and the atmosphere of that permits gay sexual acts to occur.” But, um, for us, it was like a “Fucking A right on!” thing; for them, it was a strange and curious brand of hate. (That, not for nothing, a lot of our commenters seem to share. [...]

Read SI’s Cover Story On Carlos Ruiz Now

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

It’s a great read, and the full-text is now online for your perusal. Our favorite excerpt: They tease him about everything, and the loudest one laughing at him … is him. Rather than defend himself, he’ll gyrate and turn the pop hit Like a G6 into “Like a cheese steak! Like a cheese steak!” or [...]

Here Are The (Pseudo-)Philadelphians You Can Blame For The Infuriating Tea Party Presidential Debate

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

According to its press release, “The historic Tea Party Presidential Debate is the first and only scheduled debate focusing exclusively on tea party issues, with candidates answering questions that come directly from activists within the broad grassroots movement.” But we all know what it’s really going to be: A sick little (maybe) mutedly racist blamefest [...]

Bedbugs Take Aim On Philly Cops?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

We had a feeling these bedbugs, who’ve been slowly but surely creeping up on us from NYC, might be a nasty sort. Newsworks is reporting on a possible bedbug situation at the Harbison and Levick police station, a bustling hub where prisoners, officers and detectives all pass through on a daily basis. Instead of relying solely on the City of Philadelphia and/or a larger neighborhood association [...]
