Bicycle Coalition Calls For Action

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is asking for your help in opposing a bill proposed by City Councilman William Greenlee (whom you may remember from this). Greenlee proposed the bill yesterday, which would require City Council approval for installation of any bike lane in Philadelphia. The Coalition says if the bill passes, it will “delay making our streets safer and adds an unnecessary layer of bureaucracy to a process that already has substantial public review.”

The Coalition also points out that vehicular travel lanes, as well as crosswalks and bus stops, do not need to be Council approved.

You can read the bill information here, and show your support by personalizing the letter here to be included in an email to the council.

I must have missed the “substantial public review” part of the previous plans.

This bill, in my mind, is about making it impossible to add new bike lanes. One thing that you may want to keep in mind: bike lanes are about sharing. While they remove a lane of travel for cars, they add a safe route for bicycles, a safe, designated place to pull over and load your car or commercial truck, and a place to park for religious services. All the while, not slowing down travel time (as discussed in the Bicycle Coalition report here http://www.bicyclecoalition.org/files/MODE%20SHIFT%20REPORT.pdf) but reducing the speed of vehicles, making it safer for everyone.

This bill makes it harder to share the road

bicycle lanes are about making private use of automobiles a thing of the past. They are about preparing the populace to pedal to work wearing black pajama or Mao jackets and hats.

Holy christ I hate people sometimes. But you know what makes me feel better? Cycling right by them as they sit in their cars stewing, blaming all their problems on bikes.

Rumor has it, everyone’s favorite irrelavent curmodgeon, Stu Bykovsky, awaits Greenlee in his council chambers wearing nothing but a helmet, eager to lube up his bottom bracket.

Here I thought all bills required City Council approval. Odd.
