R.I.P.: Mikey Wild, ?-2011

mikey wild

Philebrity has learned that the artist and Philly punk legend Mikey Wild passed away around 8:30AM this morning. Like many of you, we first encountered Mikey on South Street in the 1980s, where he was the Street’s de facto Mayor and bard. Mikey could be funny, Mikey could be perverse, but no matter what, he was a friend to many, and always unapologetically punk. As we await further information, please check out the Mikey Wild Mural on South Street page on Facebook, and tune in to this Friday’s “Land Of The Lost” with DJ Robert Drake on WXPN from 7-11PM, where Robert will be playing Mikey Wild recorded live at JC Dobbs, circa 1980. Our sincerest condolences go out to Mikey’s family and many friends at this time. We’ll miss you, punk.

After the jump, Ed Wilcox’s doc about Mikey, I Was Punk Before You Were Punk.

One of the first people I ever saw on the scene and South Street in 1978. A mural for sure!
