And Now, Today’s GOOD NEWS: Knights Drop $2.7M In Arts Challenge Grants
Just after we closed up shop yesterday, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced the first round of winners for their newest three-year, $9M arts funding project, the Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia. Picking among 1,700 submissions from the Philadelphia area — all of them aiming to answer the question, “What’s your best idea for the arts in Philadelphia?” — the Knights ultimately chose 36 of those ideas, awarding to them a total of $2.7M. Some of the names you’ll recognize — Vox Populi, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Philadelphia Theatre Company and the African American Museum in Philadelphia, for instance — and some of them, you won’t. But to look at the list of winners in total (posted in full after the jump) is to get a truly good feeling; in a time when arts funding is in crisis mode, it’s easy to see how these grants, many of which have been parceled out in $50K or so chunks, can make a huge difference in whether someone gets laid off or not, or whether a project or organization gets shelved in whole. Our sincerest congrats go out to the winners, many of whom we’re proud to call friends and colleagues.
