This Evening: Fangbangers

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

>>> At tonight’s episode of Philebrity Salon, the venerable Fishtown Jazz Odyssey returns for some fine, fine drinking music. No cover, sets at 10 and 12, your Anders pours the drinks. >>> And around the corner at Silk City, it’s good ol’ garage rock like they used to (and still do) make all over the [...]

Dept. Of This Will End Well: Camden To Lay Off Half Of Its Police Force

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Via the Inky: “Camden will lay off nearly half of its police officers and a third of its firefighters while eliminating positions in every city office, according to a layoff plan approved Tuesday by the state.” It’s not like they were doing anything anyway. Bobby Baccala, you cosmic prankster, you.

Made In Philly: Shark Week, The Comic Book!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The Discovery Channel just announced that they’re releasing a “Top 10 Deadliest Sharks” comic book — the first of a new line. The partnership to produce the comic is with Philly’s own Zenescope Entertainment who, from the looks of things, now have their first title that does not involve big anime-style titties. Nice work, guys!

This Moment In The Great Michael Nutter Suck-Up To Michael Vick: Meet The Press!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Nutter was on NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, where he just managed to squeeze in his “Mike’s doing great work off the field” talking point. Again. You know, it’s 3PM and I haven’t killed a single dog yet today, either. Where’s my kudos, Mixmaster Mike?

From The Desk Of Secret Pants: The Count Walks Into A Bar

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

The Count Walks Into a Bar from Secret Pants on Vimeo. You definitely need to watch this now, before the cease-and-desist from Sesame Street arrives. Possibly the best Secret Pants video ever made (shot at Connie’s Ric-Rac, natch). By the way, Secret Pants perform next on 12/23 at Johnny Brenda’s.

There’s No X-M-A-S In V-I-L-L-A-G-E

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

This makes us a little crazy: City Managing Director Richard Negrin has requested that the German Christmas Village outside City Hall have the word “Christmas” removed from its title. It will, of course, be replaced with the word “Holiday,” which is fine we suppose, but real talk: It’s hard not to feel like this is [...]

The Year Is 1981: Mick Jagger Tips A Philly Cab Driver $1

Monday, November 29th, 2010

For those of us who are increasingly obsessed with The Old Weird Philadelphia (see also: Trading Places, Blow-Out, Public Wall Writing In Philadelphia and “Memorial Day 1983″), the above video is a brief glimpse into a time when something as simple as a Rolling Stones concert could bring the city to its knees.

MP3 Of The Moment: Oldermost, “Kensington”

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Many a bearded transplant singer-songwriter has, as a kind of natural extension of the various waves of gentrification around the city ‘lo these last ten years, taken up their own neighborhood as subject matter. We can’t lie: A lot of these songs are absolutely cringeworthy, and we won’t dwell on them here. Rather, we’d like [...]

New For This Holiday Season: The Arlene Ackerman Sackwatch!

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Be still, my dogs of war! And gather ’round the hearth, for as we begin to moon-howl down another year done gone, it is time for decisions! Whereas up until now, city School Superintendent Arlene C. Ackerman (pictured) could be seen to be incompetent, lame, or just cheesy, there is now mounting evidence that Ackerman [...]

Holiday Hunting, Tips And Reminders

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Shopping for your favorite guys and gals can be tough, especially if your wallets are as weightless as ours. No worries! Philebrity is here to help! Though we told ourselves we wouldn’t go out on Black Friday, which apparently turned into Black Friday Weekend, we couldn’t stay cooped up all day, so we spent some [...]

Bridges Are Crumbling And The Woods Are Eroding! Much Needed Attention Paid To the Wiss.

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Wissahickon Valley park is experiencing erosion, sedimentation, and, in some cases, trees are just falling over! This is all from the treading of our feet, our bike tires, our horse hooves, and our doggie paws. People have stomped out paths where there weren’t supposed to be any, which alters the parks terrain and is actually [...]

Finally! Someone Took The Time To Fashion Up A Plan For Foxwoods That Might Make Us All Happy!

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

When this came to our attention last week, we were in a room of five people, three of which had a parent who came to America aboard the S.S. United. That was a pretty huge revelation to us, and we’re super stoked about Stephen Varenhorst Architects‘ proposal to incorporate the S.S. United into Foxwoods, even [...]

Thankfully, No Trampling In Philly This “Black Friday”

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Note: “Security guards stepped in to help, once they heard screaming.” No trampling in Philly this year, but did you know that the name “Black Friday” originated in Philadelphia? Go us! Starting in 1966, “Black Friday” is the name the Philadelphia Police Department started calling the Friday following Thanksgiving. It was never meant to be [...]

Thanksgiving Eve Picks: A Sort Of Homecoming

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

>>> The ancient wisdom, of course, is that Thanksgiving Eve is the biggest drinking night of the year. We have a suspicion that, if you really did the numbers across a wide sample, this might not be true, but hey, if you’re willing to go with it, so will we. As far as we can [...]
