Independence Hall Gets A $4.4M Sprucing

So that the birthplace of our nation does not go all Grey Gardens on us, Independence Hall is set to receive $4.4M for renovations via federal stimulus funding for the National Parks. Over the next 14 months, the building’s renovations will include carpentry, roofing, masonry work, painting, installation of new lighting and whatever the hell else it takes to run that tab up to $4.4M. Knowing the Philly union game, throw in a couple of light bulbs, and we’ll be set.

I hope they do a lot of work on the lawn in the back (or, if you’re on Market Street, the front) of the hall. It needs it.

Apparently one thing driving up the cost is that they have to use special scaffolding to do the work, because they can’t anchor it to the building itself because of its historical character. But the tower is leaking like a sieve right now (not to mention in critical need of a paint job), so this structural and cosmetic work is coming none too soon.

The building could use some love. I also wonder how much money the Park Service has wasted in the last 9 years “protecting” it from “terrorism”.
