Rumblings: What Are Words For?

>>>Drexel University’s new student-led “Social Graffiti” system lets Twitter users slather the wall of Nesbitt Hall with seven-story tweets. Anyone with a Twitter account can turn a 140-character message into a 36×62-foot animation projected onto the building by tagging tweets with @digmGraffiti. Profanity or other forbidden words trigger a third-party filtering system. Tweets so far have included job-hunting tips, university news, and random thoughts like, “We need a statue of Big Willy in Philly! Will Smith and Ben Franklin are the essences of Philadelphia!” [Fox29]
>>>The annual Philadelphia Writers’ Conference, entitled “Your Writing Stimulus Package,” comes to Old City this weekend. In its 62nd installment, the 3-day conference will give writers practical advice on how to improve their writing and how to market it with workshops like “how to broadcast stream of consciousness on the side of a building” and “how to write a novel entirely in tweets.” [Examiner]
>>>Speaking of stimulus packages, after launching its own currency last month in a ploy to encourage local spending, Ardmore has received a total of $10,000 from community banks to fund a second round of “Downtown Dollars” that will start in November. The paper money comes in denominations of 10 and 20 (with an expiration date of 90 days) and can be used at participating businesses. One U.S. dollar is worth two Downtown Dollars. The group sold out of its allotted supply on opening day in a matter of minutes. [Inky]
