In The Future We Will All Be Piazzas Pt. II: Could Pepsi Foot The Bill For A Passyunkiazza?

Ask anyone who lives down there, and they’ll tell ya: This intersection — where 12th and Morris streets meet Passyunk Avenue — is kind of a mess. And for as many great changes have been brought to the East Passyunk neighborhood over the past few years, public space (that’s not parking lots or baseball diamonds) in this neck of the woods is often claustrophobic and haphazard. To remedy this, the folks at Planning Collective have partnered with the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association and the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District in the hopes of finding a plan to turn the intersection into a more pedestrian-friendly space. They’re competing for a $50,000 grant through the Pepsi Refresh project — which you can help them win by voting for the project here. So far, so good, but they could use your help as they compete with other projects up for the grant. “If we’re successful,” says Planning Collective’s co-founder Clint Randall, “we’ll manage a community-driven design process that will help us figure out how to design and fill the space.” Might we suggest some public art updates so that we can finally see the rest of the King Of Jeans family?

This is amazing. I am a homeowner a block from that intersection. Whenever I make the turn from Morris to 12th I stop at the red light because the light on Passyunk is about to turn green…anyone who lives here knows what I’m talking about. If a car is behind me the honk like crazy and/or drive around me. I always see cars rolling through that red light while the light on Passyunk is green…I am so surprised there are not more car accidents at this intersection.
At the very least, they need to repaint the lines, you can see they are horrible in this picture, get some cross walk signs going…and just overall better signage telling people they need to stop at RED LIGHTS!
Which goes to my second point, whenever I try to cross on a red light with my dog, the cars just want to run the red light and hit us. They don’t feel like they have to stop.
Then there’s the littering too, but one thing at a time.
Thanks for posting this!

That intersection is death trap. I have never driven on it, but every time I walk around there I get confused as to which light is for me.

Oh come on.
You need to pay attention at that intersection, but amiller’s surprise underlies the fact that there just aren’t a lot of accidents at that intersection.
Problems with this vague “plan”: rerouting the 23 Bus, and cutting off Passyunk Ave, seriously?
Looking at the “pitch” it just looks like they’re planning on putting two islands similar to the Fountain you got at Passyunk and Tasker.
The real bullshit in the vid is claiming the sidewalks are used just for dumping snow, when they’re evidence shows someone walking probably one of the best shoveled sidewalks in all of South Philly.
This is masturbatory sniveling. Maybe they’ll win as consolation one of this summer’s Dewmocracy cases and use the caffeine to create a pitch that’s a bit more … inspired. I’ll admit insipid is close to inspired in scrabble, but no one’s playing a game but for the one these guys are playing with themselves.

I drive, walk or bike through that intersection all the time. Seems like the easiest solution to amiller’s issue would be if we all just obeyed the simple rule of DON’T HIT ANYBODY ELSE. You know… no matter what the pretty red and green lights tell us we can do. Novel idea. Doubt it will catch on.
