Early Toad Migration Results: 600 Safe, 200 Dead, ALL TOADS

Just like they did last year, hundreds and hundreds of toads have been migrating across Hagy’s Mill Road in Roxborough. But with one notable exception: Migration has been early this year, resulting in a whopping 200 dead toads, due to the folks behind The Toad Detour not being able to get said detour set up soon enough. On the upside, 600 were saved by volunteers just last night, and the Philadelphia Streets Department just issued a permit to close Eva Street and part of Port Royal for the annual toad migration in Upper Roxborough. The streets will be closed during the migration, from March 26th-April 16th. But it’s not all hard work for the toads and their fearless protectors: This, Sunday, March 28th, there’ll be a “toad party” from 6-8Pm at 7043 Ridge Avenue, complete with vegan refreshments and… people who love toads. And through April 9th, “toad walks” will be led a few times a week. Toads: They’re like you and me, except they’re toads.

Turtles are getting a head start this year, too. Plants are blooming early as well.

    See you Sunday.
