The violent, racist mess that occurred at South Philadelphia High School at the end of last year — and the gross ineptitude on the part of school officials and the School District that followed — was a shameful episode for the entire city. And even though we now know that the School District cannot be trusted to investigate itself, there may yet be justice served. The Obama administration is currently said to be rolling out a stepped-up enforcement of civil rights laws at schools throughout the U.S. And of the 38 cases the U.S. Education Department is supposed to open, one involves a “’major urban school district’ and its treatment of students who speak English as a second language.” Hopefully, it’ll be the School District of Philadelphia. Official announcements are coming Wednesday; we’ll have our eyes peeled.
