This Weekend: The Psychic Spring Preview
FRIDAY:
>>> HOLY CRAP! THE SUN IS OUT! AND FOR THE FIRST TIME IN WEEKS, I DON’T WANT TO DIE! Is this some kind of Psychic Spring Preview? So far, we like. It’s First Friday, so leave work and start drinking now. Then pay visits to present-day Philly music royalty: Either Man Man at The Trocadero, or RJD2 at First Unitarian Church.
>>> In dance-land, here is a good, good, VERY good time just waiting to happen: Robotique, DJ Billy Werner‘s space disco party that we are always telling you about, with special guest DJ Rich Medina (himself a legend of sorts) at Kung Fu Necktie. If you attend one Robotique in these crumbling dregs of winter, make it this one. Also, Sex Dwarf at Fluid, where you can play Goth Bingo: Alice In Wonderland Edition.
SATURDAY:
>>> Summer Cats, who may or may not have gotten their name from some kind of Twee-Pop Name Generator, are from Melbourne, Australia, and completely delightful in every way. They play England Belongs To Twee at Kung Fu Necktie. (KFN, you’re on a crazy roll this week, and we’re getting tired of typing your name.)
>>> Out in West Philly, the legendary and revered Art Ensemble Of Chicago plays at International House. Not a lot we can say about this except that this beloved avant-jazz unit except to say that this is the most awesome head music happening in Philly all weekend.
>>> And for those of you who skank unironically, HELLO. We will see you late night at Ten Commandments at the Barbary. We mean it this time.
SUNDAY:
>>> The Oscars. Please tell us you saw The Hurt Locker. Rooting for James Cameron’s ex-wives is the equivalent of rooting for yourself.
>>> Why is the Ben Vaughn show on Sunday night at the M Room a secret? We have no idea. If this life has taught us one thing: If you do have the misfortune to be playing the M Room on a Sunday night, you’d probably wanna let as many people know as possible. Whatever: Ben Vaughn is playing the M Room. He’s awesome. He can do what he wants.
