More Someone Famous Went Somewhere Once: DJ Deejay’s Complete Recollections, Vol. I

Local rock historian/DJ/promoter DJ Deejay (pictured) has lived here longer than you. He’s seen some things. And in response to our Someone Famous Went Somewhere Once posts, DJ took it upon himself today to begin cataloging every someone famous he’s ever seen somewhere once. Now, in his own words, is the first installment of DJ Deejay’s Complete Someone Famous Went Somewhere Once Recollections. Enjoy.

John Cusack at JC Dobbs, weekday night, fall of 1992: Bands playing were Crossbone Pie and a band that was on Elektra Records called “Life Sex & Death.” There was like 12 people in the club… I think I was like 12 years old.

Slash at JC Dobbs, Winter 1994: I was on stage performing and Kathy James, the owner of the club, came up to me and asked if we’d like to have a guest come up and play. I said, “Who?” She responded, “Slash.” I said, “Sure.” We played “Johnny B. Goode,” Slash on guitar and me on vocals, Mick & Keith-style, on the microphone.

Charlie Watts at Tower Records on South Street, Fall of 1997: I have no real details.

Stone Gossard, founding member and guitar player for Pearl Jam, Silk City, July 2, 2003: I was on door duties on a typical Friday night (you remember these times, Joey!). Pearl Jam was doing 2 nights in Camden, July 3 & July 4… cab pulls up, Stone gets out, comes to door, i say, “Stone!” He says, “What?” I say, “My name is DJ, it’s nice to meet you.” He hands me his I.D. & goes into bar to dance to Ralph’s mix… he grooved particularly on TLC. End of night he comes up to me, shakes my hand and says, “Great place you got here.” I say, “You gonna sing tomorrow night?” (There’s a tune called “Mankind” on the No Code record where Stone is the lead vocalist.) He laughs and says, “Awwww, I dont think so!” I say, “You want me to kick Eddie’s ass? I will, ya know.” He laughs and gives me two tickets to the concert. He didn’t sing and I didn’t kick Eddie’s ass.

Bam Margera, Everywhere, Constantly: I see Bam Margera all the time, but I guess that doesn’t completely count seeing as he’s local… but i did hear 3 skater kids discussing him and Johnny Knoxville on the subway in london this past summer… interesting to hear people discuss someone you’re friends with in another country.

Tom Keifer, founding member and singer of Cinderella, Springfield PA (Delaware County): I saw Tom a lot when I was growing up… we grew up in the same neighborhood… he used to drive around in an army green ford Pinto with “Cinderella” spray painted across the side, very punk rock looking. I knocked on his familys front door once and asked if he needed someone to cut the grass (I was trying to make some money for new skateboard wheels). He said, “How much?” I said, “Let me look at the backyard to see how big it is.” I went around to the backyard and there were leopard print spandex pants & sliver capes hanging from the clothes line… i came back to the front door and said “ten dollars.” Tom said, “Ummmm nah. I’ll just do it myself.” A year later, I saw him opening for David Lee Roth. I think I was 5.

Good Charlotte, King Of Prussia Tower Records, Date Unknown: This one was painful… they came into the Tower Records in King of Prussia where I was the store artist (window displays etc). My boss said, “The guys from Good Charolette want to meet you to thank you for the display you made of their record.” I said, “Do i have to?” He said, “Yeah…you do.” I walked out of the backroom area onto the sales floor, the singer came up and said, “Thanks for the display.” I said, “You’re welcome… so what kind of music do you guys like, like what’s your influences?” He looked at me like a deer in headlights or as if it was a trick question and replied, “Uhhhhhhhhh, punk?” I said, “Yeah i understand that but what bands specifically?” He responded, “Uhhhhhhhhh like…uhhhh West Coast punk.” I realized these dudes were possibly nice people but completely puppets on strings with no clue how to answer a question without someone telling them what they were supposed to say. I never liked that band.

Do you know of Someone Famous Who Went Somewhere Once in Philadelphia? We don’t care, but we’ll humor you. Send your tips and pics to tips[at]philebrity[dot]com.

Are you sure that was Good Charlotte? It was probably just some kids who worked at the Hot Topic.
