Fun With Temple Archives: Evidence Of Ancient Hipster Bike-To-Work Civilization Emerges

We’re gonna mention it every Friday until you do it: You should totally follow Urban Archives (Paley Library, Temple University) on Facebook. The pic above is from their 2010 calendar on transit in Philadelphia, and we couldn’t help but wonder: Could this man (Lord Whimsy’s dad?) have ever known that his simple act of fun, environmental consciousness would one day result in a whole roomful of assholes arguing every time Philebrity posts something about bicycling in the city? If he did, he probably would have taken the bus. Or read Phawker.

    He appears to be flying, too. Maybe he’s just a vampire. I know they weren’t cool in 1979 but that doesn’t mean they weren’t riding their bikes around Philly.

    Vampires weren’t cool in 1979?! Says who? That’s the year ‘Dracula’ starring Frank Langella came out. It’s the reason I’m into vampires today.

    Ha! Knew this was coming. The image was a pre-Photoshop marring they did with prints in the newspaper back in the day. We covered up some of the really bad whiteout stuff, but generally leave prints as is as a rule. That dude is the real deal. Time traveler perhaps? Weird print but too good to let go.
