Bart Blatstein To Break Ground On 2nd & Girard Shopping Center Tuesday: Yelp Already Said To Be Building A Page Where People Can Go Complain About It

Pathmark to rock a Whole Foods move in NoLibs?

On Tuesday, February 16 at 3:30 p.m, developer Bart Blatstein will be breaking ground on his long-rumored shopping center at Second Street and Girard Ave. in Northern Liberties. Dubbed The Shops at Schmidt’s, it will contain something so foreign in these parts we almost can’t believe it: A supermarket. According to the press release, TSAS will contain “the first of Pathmark’s new, re-imagined grocery stores, a two-story facility featuring a host of prepared foods to go and a dramatic increase in local, sustainable product offerings. A hardware store, bank branch and other crucial retail outlets are also part of the plan.” The project is slated for completion later this year, to be followed by “The Residences at Schmidts, 600 new residential units in three separate buildings surrounding a lushly landscaped one-acre park area.” Curious about what it’ll all look like? Whatever the over/under is on the date of completion, I’ll take the over.

They’ve been digging over there for a month+ so I’m not sure what exactly the “groundbreaking” entails, though I suppose it could mean that things will actually start to go up instead of just moving dirt around.

Its largely ceremonial. They lay in the basic groundwork so they know they can build it, and then have a “groundbreaking” ceremony to celebrate the actual full-blown start.

Anyone who complains about this one can promptly suck a fart out of my ass (with the exception of the cornerstore at Girard and Frankford, Sorry dude!). I will now be able to walk to a grocery store. 100% hell yes.

This is mostly positive in my book, as it is something I feel the whole NoLibs/Fishtown and even Old City sect has been lacking for far too long. To spare anyone of the god awful trek through some of the worst humanity that Port Fishington has to offer(otherwise known as shopping at Thriftway)is a positive step in the right direction. Though, I am curious as to what it will do to Palm Market and Pink Dolphin. Maybe force them into more competitive prices? They are fantastic small businesses and all, but they do have quite a tendency towards price gouging.
