941 Theater Shut Down For Good, But The Gang Keeps On Truckin’

941Back in November, we broke the news to you that the 941 Theater, the independent cinema and music outpost in Northern Liberties, had been shut down after a series of L&I violations. What followed was a series of fundraising events geared towards getting the 941 out of the red and back open again. Sadly, however, these efforts were not enough, and yesterday, in an email to supporters, Doug Sakmann of the 941 and Backseat Conceptions announced that plans to reopen the 941 have been ditched. “Unfortunately, the 941 Theater is not going to re-open,” he said. “Even with your support it would be impossible to raise the money needed at this point to save the space.” However, Sakmann was quick to add that he and his crew hadn’t given up the fight just yet, and went on to say that “your donations have helped us to continue the fight and we’ll be presenting screenings at 2424 Studios.” The first post-941 screening event will be a Pre-Valentines Day Pot-luck Mixer in the Skybox at 2424 Studios featuring the so-maudlin-it’s-funny-sometimes early Al Pacino flick The Panic In Needle Park. More screenings at 2424 are promised, and after the jump, just because we really kind of love this movie, the trailer for The Panic In Needle Park.

Full disclosure: Philebrity is also based out of (and indeed does events at) 2424 Studios. And though we are supporters of 941 Theater and Backseat Conceptions and their endeavors, we have no direct involvement. You know, just so you know.
