Your Casino Update: “You’re Probably Right To Be Cynical And Jaundiced About Us”

casinoAmazing quote, Foxwoods attorney Fred Jacoby! Jacoby uttered this memorable bon mot whilst pleading his case before what is being characterized as an “increasingly impatient” PA Gaming Control Board. Now, before we go any further, can we all take a moment to appreciate our “increasingly impatient” PA Gaming Control Board? You know, the one that hatched gaming legislation in the dead of night, without even asking Philadelphia what it thought, and while all of the good people of the world slept? The Gaming Control Board that snuck table games legislation into what was supposed to be some regular state budget process? Yeah, those guys. They’re impatient! Awwww. We’ll say this now since the people who cover this for the dailies can’t: One of the few joys of this recession has been the chance to watch all of these gaming fuckers — the people who represent the state of PA, the casino investors, their weird Joe Sixpack lobby, the whole gang — twist in the wind as Foxwoods shits the bed completely and Sugarhouse aggressively tries to lower expectations. We gotta tell you: It’s been fucking exquisite. Anyway, yeah, Foxwoods got fined for not having its shit together, but also, they claim to have a new mystery investor who’s gonna clear all of this up… soon. Really. This is the line. And the PA Gaming Control Board pretty much has to swallow it. That’s rich. Ohhh, that is rich. Meanwhile, PA slots revenue now tops New Jersey’s. So maybe PA Game Fucks get the last laugh here, too. Oh well, it was nice to have laughed at all.

I just want to point out that Sugarhouse, although it will certainly be bad for Fishtown, is going to be a huge success from a business stand point. Specifically, because of the new table games law (which btw is taxed less than slots 16% vs 40%!!). Why on earth would people from Philadelphia drive an hour and a half to play an evening of poker? When it was all slots, yeah, it would have been of questionable interest to the public at large, but now it’s a sure thing.
