New Year, New Laws, Same Old NORML

As evidenced by that scene in It’s Complicated where Steve Martin and Meryl Streep spark up a doobie, it’s been so long since smoking weed was cool that there oughta be a goddamned Time Life infomercial for it already. But you know what? We don’t care. Weed is beautiful. Weed keeps you out of trouble. Weed is for everybody. So why, in this day and age, when weed decriminalization is closer at hand than it’s been in a long time, is the Philly chapter of NORML preaching to what it perceives as The Converted when in fact, The Converted is no longer just Phish fans but damned near everybody? Sorry, we’re venting; we just got a press release from Philly NORML — that’s National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws for short, by the way — who are hosting a big concert and fundraiser on January 29th at The Rotunda. Their goals couldn’t be more noble — PhillyNORML was nstrumental last year in getting HB 1393, a medical marijuana bill, introduced in Harrisburg, and they are also in negotiations with the City government to change arrest procedures so that minor marijuana possession no longer results in mandatory custodial arrest — but god damn it if this event doesn’t make us wanna swear off the evil weed forever: It’s a vegan bake sale with appearances by Agent Moosehead, Psychadelphia, Flux Capacitor, The Big Dirty, and DJ Ginkgo. C’mon, guys: Are you even trying to expand the sphere of your influence? We love you, weed. But must you continue to make your advocates so damned corny?

Oh man, and I was seriously hoping pro-Catholic jamband the Rhythm Method was going to be there.

Seems to me that, in order to do so, one may try to raise money… maybe through a “fundraiser” that, perhaps, targets the demographic most likely to participate and give money? [yeah, yeah, queue 'hippies don't have money' retort].

Why don’t you guys organize something for the benefit of NORML?

wait, are accusing them of NOT selling out to the mainstream?

    soooooooo TRUE!!!
and hey, did you know you can make OIL from it and that it used to be legal and it helped win WWII ?!?!?!?!?!

whoever wrote this is a duh duh duh douchebag.

First of all, weed isn’t for everybody. I know plenty of people who can’t smoke it due to its pejorative effects on them. I do smoke it, and a hell of a lot of it, but it’s not for everyone.

The fact that these “corny” acts are supporting the NORML benefit only supports the fact that the jam band scene is the only one willing to do anything about the cause. Sure, everyone from rappers to rockers to rednecks smokes weed, but what are they doing to help make legalization a reality? Nothing. That is just “shitty.” Better to be corny than shitty.
