When a male off-cuty cop punched a female Wawa clerk on December 15 after he didn’t like the way she carded him for his chew, you knew there was gonna be more to this story. As it happens, the offending officer, Brian Decker, was fired yesterday, and charges will be pressed against him. But that’s just the boring facts! Let’s talk about the comments on this story about it all in the Delco Times. They are epic! They are thorny! And they reveal the dark secret of these (mostly) law-abiding little suburban towns — that the people there are lawful because they want to be, and often in spite of the mall cop mentality that reigns supreme when you have a police force that is so bored it has to exert authority, off-duty, in places where absolutely none is required. Kind of like that off-duty cop in DC who pulled a gun during a snowball fight. Except, you know, DC actually has crime.
