Film Sweat: Long Ago, Life Was Clean; Sex Was Bad, Called Obscene, And The Rich Were So Mean
RECOMMENDED:
What, you thought we were gonna go with Avatar? What are you, 14, son? (OK, fair enough: It’s a popcorn movie. Do your thing.) At any rate, we can’t act like The Young Victoria isn’t the kind of sleepy English costume drama you can take The Olds to see over the holidays, and maybe even eke out some things to dig for yourself. For one, the producer credits alone would indicate that this is not exactly some podunk BBC period drama: Martin Scorcese is on board, and so is Sarah Ferguson (the O.G. Fergie, you know, the one that doesn’t pee her pants). Emily Blunt (she played the evil assistant in The Devil Wears Prada) delivers a performance in this fictitious/historical drama that’s winning her lots of great notices. The sets and locations are impeccable, as are the costumes. Also, it will make your Olds very happy. Why not, right?ALSO NOW IN THEATERS: The aformentioned Avatar, director James Cameron‘s gagillion-dollar HDTV demo reel; Me & Orson Welles, director Richard Linklater‘s perfectly competent speculative fantasy about a young man’s week on the stage with Mr. Welles, which will work for you only if you believe Zac Efron can act (we say “no,” but Claire Danes turns in a pretty delightful appearance here and it’s enough of a confection that it kind of doesn’t matter that Efron sucks anyway); Did You Hear About The Morgans?, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and making us feel really bummed for poor Hugh Grant because we still believe he really is better than this; and Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon‘s neck as the soccer team that shocked the world.
