Wrong. That network uses the city light poles, but private towers and roof tops, about 30 of them.

JL- to be clear, prior to this transaction, the city owned only the light poles on which the wifi gear was mounted. The towers and rooftops held additional gear that connect not only to the street level wifi, but to each other using fiber and microwave. This “back-haul” component of the network required mounting locations on tower and rooftop sites NOT owned by the city. This is also the piece of the network that city will leverage to effect its goals mentioned in the press release.

jrn: the City already owns the tower sites. That was the whole deal. City leased various utility poles, light poles and city-owned rooftops space to Earthlink to make that deal go.

So they are just buying the tubes.
