Fact: Almost no one cares about the Dad Vail Regatta, and the people that do seem to mostly agree that it should remain in Philly, on the Schuylkill, where it has been since all the way back when the Catholic mass was still in Latin. Mayor Nutter, as it happens, knows a thing or two about the Dad Vail; like our esteemed editor, he went to St. Joe’s Prep, where the Dad Vail is akin to big football games on holidays or annual bake sales or whatever it is you low-cultured Drains On Society revere. So when he and Congressman Bob Brady started ringing up local universities and floating the idea of Philly having its own damned regatta, on the same day as the damned sell-out Dad Vail now relocated to Rumson, NJ, they found themselves hearing the same refrain from many local rowing teams: “TOTALLY, BRAH!” So we’re gonna have our own damned regatta! And Brady says he has some sponsors lined up! Maybe we’ll even call it “The Mayor’s Cup!” For their part, the organizers of the Dad Vail are now bound to this dumb Rumson thing, and already seem a little dickhurt about how they’re getting pwned left and right on this. On Action News last night, they were quoted as saying they’re already looking forward to being back in Philly in 2011. Maybe. And yes, we watch Action News. It’s really funny looking in hi-def, and there’s always the chance that Oxford Blues will be the Million Dollar Movie.
