Fun With The Past: Did Any Of You Know Terror Suspect David Headley/Daood Gilani When He Managed The Khyber Pass In The 1980s?

khyberAlright, Old Heads: Remember back when Philadelphia was weird (like way weird, like Skinz and Eraserhead and Lee Paris and Gary Heidnik weird), and The Khyber Pass was just some old bar where indie-rock bands didn’t play, because INDIE ROCK WAS NOT INVENTED YET? If you frequented the Khyber in those pre- David & Steve Simons days, you might have known onetime bar manager David Headley/Daood Gilani, whom you may remember from his frequent claims that “he had contempt for infidels [and] He kept talking about the return of the 14th century, saying Islam was going to take over the world.” Well, um, in some ways, he was kind of right, and sure enough, 24 years later, here’s David at the center of a plot to attack a Danish newspaper that published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. It was one of the lead stories in yesterday’s NYT, and it is a wild, sprawling tale to be sure. But we’re also curious about David’s time as a younger man here in Philly. Did any of you know him, or frequent the bar in those days? Please share your memories in the comments, or with us at tips[at]philebrity[dot]com.

Sorry–spent most of my time with the lisping infidels at Third Street Jazz.

I worked for his cousin Farid (fred) for a couple years. They owned a video store on 17th and Spruce in the late 90′s. Daood (David) would come down from NY to run things some times. I once came in with Indian food and he went on about how Ghandi was the biggest piece of shit to ever live. He had me buy him brass knuckles from chinatown once and promised me he would take me to Scores one night. Glad to hear he is doing well.
