From The Travel Film Archive. We defy the folks at GPTMC to splice some 30-second spots out of this and put it on the air nationwide.

    This 1977 Promo for Philly is classic viewing! Ironic just how much of ‘then’ is still here today … but this is really worth the view just to check out …

    *NewMarket (the current hole at 2/Lombard)
    *the FIRST 3-stadium sports complex in S Philly
    *the smoke/mirrors the city used trying to sell Penn’s Landing (even back then!)
    *the Living History Center (now WHYY)
    *back when you could actually walk up and TOUCH the Liberty Bell!
    *when we actually had a worthy Easter Parade (of course, now we have a worthy Easter Zombie Crawl… jus’ sayin!)
    *and finally – before the era of corporate sponsors when our 4th of July weeklong celebration was simply called Freedom Week;

    classic Philadelphia – on video. LOVE IT!

    this is way cool. anyone know where what skyscraper the tourists are looking out from at 5:44?

  4. arcticsplasher Says:

    damn, those are some serious lightning rods on William Penn’s head.

    The skyscraper with observatory is the Penn Mutual building at 6th and Walnut. Great view of Independence Hall as you went up the glass elevator.

    thanks aetchells. i didn’t realize that building had an observatory, or even slanted windows. i assume its closed to the public now?
