This Weekend: November Rain
FRIDAY:
>>> In case you didn’t know, this roller derby stuff is not only big business, but it’s also bloomed into a bona fide subculture of its own. And with leagues all over the country these days, you’ll be pleased to know that Philly pretty much leads the back, both competitively and in terms of local fan support. When nobody was looking, Philly quietly became Roller Derby City, U.S.A. Which is why Declaration of Derby 2009 at the PA Convention Center is such a big deal. It’s the final event of the 2009 WFTDA Tournament, but it’s also the single biggest gathering of roller derby fans and teams of the year. Word on the street is that Philly’s set to take it all this year, and in lieu of WFC Phils ‘09, hey, we’ll take it.
>>> Elsewhere: Neil Hamburger and Secret Pants bring their alt-comedy to Johnny Brenda’s; White Denim plays Kung Fu Necktie; there’s Peaches with Amanda Blank at the TLA; and, as noted below, Making Time with the xx and Phenomenal Handclap Band is at Voyeur (née Pure).
SATURDAY:
>>> Nothing! I mean, of course, things are happening, but nothing we really felt like singling out. Isn’t that bizarre? This never happens!
SUNDAY:
>>> Back for another year, there’s Found Footage Festival at Connies Ric Rac. Originally scheduled to be held at the 941 Theater, it’s now a benefit for 941, in light of their recent (temporary) closing.
>>> And finally, Times New Viking and The Mad Scene at Kung Fu Necktie.

Stop the presses. DJ Marilyn actually went out to a party that isn’t her own or geek related. Finally checked out the new Sorted at the new Barbary. That party is still hot shit after all these years!

The Parsnip Revolt and Paper Monster played to a packed house at the M Room on Saturday, that would have been a good mention…
