It Almost Wouldn’t Be Autumn If We Couldn’t Hear The Whining Of The Poor, Soon-To-Be-Extinct Mummers

Brothers-for-Website2-225x168Mummery: Where some see a proud working class tradition, others (like us) see an unwholesome ghost of minstrelsy and a hard-to-erase piss smell. Well, no matter: It’s 2009, and even if the debate had somehow been magically settled forever, nobody’s got any money left hanging around for Mummery — not even the Mummers. So here comes Save The Mummers, the new fund-raising concern that seeks to raise money year-round in an effort to keep the parade, you will pardon the pun, afloat. And the Save The Mummers cause has just netted its first celebrity endorsement: The Bacon Brothers (at right), who are following up on their truly not-good Save The Mummers tribute song from last year with a benefit booking at the Electric Factory on December 5. Now, to their (and the budget crisis’) credit, the Mummers are finally “striving to be self reliant in continuing our tradition” and have ended their centuries-long suck on city resources, so that deserves a bravo at least. In addition, the Mums have a track record of being great fundraisers, so you can probably rest easy knowing that the parade will, in all likelihood, happen this year, replete with Star Wars and topical, er, “Mexican” themes.

Maybe with one of the Mexican themes we can finally see black(face) tacos dancing down Broad Street?

As much as you don’t like the Mummers, You should probably think about the void that would be created by their disappearance. Their community needs that distraction. I would rather have them practicing their dancing under I-95 in sweatpants on weekends than beating up hipsters for kicks. Wait, let me rethink this one.
