Phashionista: When Life Gives You Lemons, Just… Put On Albert Maysles’ Glasses

glassesOf course you know Albert Maysles. Along with his now-departed brother David, the Maysles Brothers have contributed much to the art of the documentary film since they began in 1962. Maysles — who resides in New York but maintains many local connections here in Philly — has remained a definitely stylish filmmaker up to the present day, and as he’s grown older, many documentarians have looked up to him as a mentor or role model. And that’s how this business with the glasses began. Much like Elvis Costello or Elton John, Maysles’ vintage eyeglasses have become a sort of visual signature; and at some point over the last few years, filmmaker Jess Search established Maysles glasses as a kind of talisman for young filmmakers with her website, Albert Maysles’ Glasses, where she posts pictures of visitors wearing a pair of Maysles’ glasses that he gave to her as a gift. What is the attraction? For young filmmakers, they seem to give the gift of another perspective:

Having been the proud owner of Al Maysles glasses for a few weeks, I can tell you that there is something realyl really unusual about these frames. Everyone who puts them on is totally transformed. It’s blinding, NO ONE LOOKS LIKE THEMSELVES WHEN THEY WEAR THEM (hmm unless they only look truly themselves when they wear them?).

Now, though, those looking to channel Maysles’ style won’t have to go to London and don them for just five minutes and a quick snap, hoping to grab that mojo. In an unlikely turn, Maysles has partnered with eyewear designers Barton Perreira and Barney’s for a special, limited edition set of Maysles-inspired specs; proceeds go to the Maysles Institute. Will they help you get into Sundance? That remains to be seen, but they will almost definitely get you into some good vibes.
