Penn Park To Break Ground On Friday And Probably Be Awesome

pennpark_large_1

On Friday, the University Of Pennsylvania will break ground on the long-in-coming Penn Park, which will occupy a 24-acre parcel of land south of Walnut Street, with Amtrak rail lines to the east and the SEPTA rail corridor to the west and below South Street. It’s a massive project: It’ll cost $46M, feature open space, athletic fields and tennis courts, and it won’t be finished until 2011. University City Review has a lot more details on the project, but if you want the eye candy — and in this case, you definitely do — head over to Penn Connects, where there’s a lot more renderings.

    Is that a pedistrian bridge across the Schuylkill River?

  • lutton

    Sorry, I mean on the Penn Connects website link, images 3 & 4 seem to include a ped bridge to the east side of the river.

    @lutton – it is a ped bridge. Its been in Penn’s plans for years, providing a connection between Locust Walk and Spruce St in Center City, but I don’t think its part of the initial Penn Park development, given the high costs. Still, would be awesome someday.

    I’m ridiculously excited about this entire project. Between this, the continuing development of the park and trail across the river, and the new South Street bridge, this section of the city is going to be transformed in the next 5-10 years.

    everything is looking up on the West side of our wonderful city

    at least up to 52st or so . . .

    great stuff

    maybe World Cafe Live will even stop sucking in the next 5-10 years.

  • mappy

    there will be a bridge from world cafe live to the 21st century.

    It’s odd. Some of the renderings have the ped/bike bridge over the river, some don’t. There’s nothing about it in the UC Review article or in the text about the park. Is the bridge on the horizon or has a date been left nebulous?

  • barryg

    @djlynnabraham, unlikely.

    People need to stop talkin’ shit about the Delaware waterfront; I mean it would be sweet to see it unsuckified but the Schuylkill is so bangin’.

    Last night I went for a run on the service road along the Penn sports fields and enjoyed a view of both the skyline and the underbelly of the new South St. bridge. Get down there while you have the chance.
