Local Tibetan Monk Decides Philadelphia Is In Dire Need Of A Mandala, We Accept

samten_hmThe local high-profile Buddhist Monk, Venerable Losang Samten, has announced that he will be creating a Kalachakra Mandala through the end of October and well into November at the Gershman Y. Mandalas are intricate images that are painstakingly sculpted out of grains of sand before being destroyed. In March, 2008 Samten was the first to create a Wheel Of Life Mandala in the United States and he brought that honor to Philly. The entire process will go on for four weeks at the Y until November 22, when the piece will be dismantled and the sand will be tossed into the Schuylkill River, so if you missed it before, make plans to get there before it’s gone. Mandalas are traditionally created in selected locations with specific goals and intentions; hence this Kalachakra mandala is being offered by Samten as a prayer for peace for Philadelphia, which he believes to be in a serious crisis. We can’t say we disagree really, but the important point is, will it help us win the World Series or not, dude? Because if not … well, we just DONT HAVE TIME RIGHT NOW. COME ON.

A Calendar of Mandala events is available here.
The Gershman Y is located at 401 South Broad St. 215-446-7018.
