Brain Trust: Has White-O-Ween Finally Died A Slow, Quiet Death In Philadelphia?

al-jolson-blackfaceIt’s usually right around this time of year when we start hearing of White-O-Ween, a shameful local tradition in which some subsection of Philly’s Noble White Prole populace deems an alternative Halloween in which white children can trick or treat in a (traditionally white) neighborhood, free of the fear that children of other races will show up early and hog all the candy. (For you recent transplants out there: Yes, this is/was a real thing. Charming, no?) What with Halloween preps underway in all quarters this week, we thought of White-O-Ween for the first time in a while, and went looking for evidence of it this year. And we found a curious thing: Nothing. Traditionally, some idiot will pipe up on a community messageboard, co-ordinating date and time for an all-white All Hallow’s Eve… but not this year, and as best we can tell, not even in Fairmount, which had long been among White-O-Ween’s most vocal and visible holdouts. So we’ll ask you: Any news of White-O-Ween in your neighborhood this year? We hope the answer is a definitive “no,” but hey: We have no expectations.

looks like jburnside needs to work on his math: on Halloween “in a little more than 3 years…” Barack Obama will be finishing up his first term in office.

I think poor arithmetic skills are the least of his worries though.
