Philly Artist Ryan Trecartin Becomes The First Philly Artist In Decades To See $150,000, All In One Place, At The Same Time
A friend who works as an art handler at MoMA was once asked, “What’s the most difficult part of your job?” His response: “installing the work of someone you went to art school with.” And that’s the case for many of the ex-RISD students, current URBN employees now here in Philadelphia. Ryan Trecartin, 28 year-old Philly based artist who has just won Temple’s new staggering $150,000 Wolgin International Competition in the Fine Arts. Trecartin (pictured at right receiving his award), a 2004 RISD graduate, makes frenetic films that are sort of like hyperactive vlogs by consumerist teenagers (played by Trecartin’s friends in brightly-colored ghoulish makeup and wigs). You may have seen his show at the Fabric Workshop this summer with Tristin Lowe (Mocha Dick, the huge felt whale), Peter Lowe, and Virgil Marti. Follow the link to a clip from a previous Trecartin work, I-BE-AREA.

i’m a big fan of Ryan’s, but i think if that crusty old man saw any of his videos, he’d yank that check back with the quickness.
