This Evening: Lush/Life
>>> We’ve been grooving on Philly native Lushlife‘s latest album, Cassette City, for a little while now. We’ll be talking about it more a little later, but for now, suffice it to say that Raj Haldar — Lushlife’s government name — has made the freshest hip-hop record we’ve heard since Hustle Simmons‘ debut last year. But it almost feels weird to even call it a hip-hop record; after all, how many hip-hop kids — even backpackers — do you know out there who namecheck David Axelrod, Van Dyke Parks and The Association? Haldar has said that with Cassette City, he’s tried to make the hip-hop version of a chamber pop record, and that’s what he’s done. The music contained therein is sweeping, but never mincing. It’s smart, just self-conscious-enough, and very, very embeddable. Lushlife plays a very rare local show tonight, opening for Antipop Consortium at Silk City. It’s killing us that we can’t go, because right around the corner…
>>> …it’s Philebrity Salon with special guest DJ David Dye. Do yourself a favor and check out both. They go well together.
